Follow Your Curiosity to Avoid Creative Blocks
Most creative blocks happen because you've stopped following your curiosity.
As creatives, we're often told to focus on productivity, consistency, and discipline. Those things matter. But beneath all of them curiosity is the treasure.
Curiosity is the engine of creativity.
It's the force that makes you ask questions, explore new perspectives, experiment with different approaches, and notice things other people overlook. When curiosity is alive, creativity flows naturally. When curiosity is ignored, creativity begins to feel like work.
Many creative blocks appear when we become overly concerned with outcomes.
We start asking questions like:
Will this be successful?
Will people like it?
Is this good enough?
Can I make money from it?
These questions aren't bad, but they can pull us away from the simple thing that started the creative process in the first place, which is genuine interest.
Curiosity doesn't care about results.
It simply wants to explore.
When you're feeling creatively blocked, a great approach to the solution is to become interested again.
Read something you know nothing about.
Watch a documentary on a subject that interests you.
Take a different route home.
Start a conversation with someone outside your usual circle.
Follow the random question that won't leave your mind alone.
Keep in mind the goal here isn't to find your next project.
The goal is to reconnect with wonder.
Creative blocks often dissolve when you stop trying to create and start trying to discover, to learn new things.
The more curious you become, the more life reveals itself to you. And the more life reveals itself, the more material you have to create from.
So the next time you feel stuck, ask yourself, "What am I curious about right now?"
Then follow it.
Curiosity is your mind’s way of showing you the way forward.
